Viceregal Lodge & Botanical Gardens, Shimla

The Rashtrapati Niwas, also known as Viceregal Lodge, is located on the Observatory Hills of Shimla, Himachal Pradesh, India. It was formerly the residence of the British Viceroy of India. It houses some of the most ancient articles and photographs going back to the times of the British rule in India. The Viceregal Lodge was designed by British architect Henry Irwin and built in the Jacobethan style during Lord Dufferin’s tenure as Viceroy. Its construction started in 1880 and was completed in 1888. Lord Dufferin occupied the lodge on 23 July 1888.

Indian Institute of Advanced Study, Shimla

A residential centre for higher education, the Indian Institute of Advanced Study (IIAS), is located on Observatory hill – one of the seven hills of Shimla. Formed in 1964, this institute was formally inaugurated by Dr. S. Radhakrishnan – the former President of India on 20th October 1965. The history of this learning centre is more than 100 years old. IIAS was originally built as home for Lord Duffein, who was the Viceroy of India during the years 1884 and 1888. It was known as the Visceregal Lodge at that time. Many historic decisions, including the Shimla Conference of 1945 and the Separation of Pakistan and East Pakistan in 1947, have been taken in this building. Post-independence, the edifice was renamed as 'Rashtrapati Nivas' and was used by the President of India as a summer retreat. It was later converted into a research centre for Indian culture, religion, humanities and social and natural sciences. The architectural beauty of the building is quaint and captivating. Henry Irwin, an architect in Public Works Department, designed the building. The use of grey stone and exotic Burmese teak gives this heritage building an exquisite look that mesmerises onlookers at the very first glance. A beautiful garden and well-stocked museum are also located within the campus. Movie Connect: The charisma of Indian Institute of Advanced Study has attracted historians, tourists, archaeologists and even Bollywood filmmakers. Many scenes of the blockbuster hit released in 2005 - Black have been shot at IIAS. This spectacular edifice was shown as Michelle's (Rani Mukherjee) college. Black was a Sanjay Leela Bhansali film, starring superstars Amitabh Bachchan and Rani Mukherjee

Jakhu Temple, Shimla

The Jakhoo Temple is an ancient temple dedicated to Lord Hanuman. It is believed that this temple holds the footprints of Lord Hanuman. It is located on the Jakhoo Hill, which is 2.5 km from the Ridge and offers beautiful views of the Shivalik Mountains and the nearby town of Sanjauli. It is the highest peak in Shimla and gives shelter to countless playful monkeys which can be found waiting to be fed by visitors. According to the Ramayana, Hanuman stopped at the location to rest while searching for the Sanjivni Booti to revive Lakshmana.

Sankat Mochan Temple, Shimla

Popular Hindu temple complex in a picturesque setting known for its views & tranquil atmosphere. This spiritual destination is located approximately 5 kilometers away from Shimla and it is the second most popular tourist spot after Jakhu Temple. The temple, which was established in the year 1950, was the result of an initiative taken by the noted religious figure-Baba Neeb Karori Ji Maharaj, who was amazed by the beauty of the place. He stayed in the deep dark woods for ten days and decided to establish a Hindu temple on the location. This majestic temple houses the deities of Lord Rama, Lord Shiva, and Hanuman.

Kufri, Shimla

Kufri is a small hill station in Shimla district of Himachal Pradesh state in India. It is located 20 km from Shimla. The highest point in the surrounding region, Kufri has a Himalayan wildlife zoo which hosts rare antelopes, felines and birds including the Himalayan monal, the state bird of Himachal Pradesh until 2007. During winter a meandering path through the potato plantations turns into a popular ski track. Chini Bunglow - It is the Kufri bungalow which is very famous for its statues and architecture.

Mall Road, Shimla

Mall Road is the main street in Shimla, the capital city of Himachal Pradesh, India. Constructed during British colonial rule, the Mall road is located a level below the ridge. The offices of municipal corporation, fire service, and police headquarters are located here. Automobiles, except emergency vehicles are not allowed on this road. Mall Road has a number of showrooms, department stores, shops, restaurants and cafes. A Himachal emporium that offers handicraft products of Himachal Pradesh like locally designed woolen clothes, branded clothes, pottery items, wooden products, and jewellery is also located here.

Scandal Point, Shimla

Scandal Point is located to the western edge of Shimla where two of the city's most important roads, The Ridge and Mall Road, converge. This pleasant small square which is over looked by the mock-Tudor state post office has the bizarre name of Scandal Point and where there is an intriguing name there must be an equally gripping story, which sadly, can be only loosely based on facts. The tale of the Scandal Point involves the Maharaja of Patiala, Bhupinder Singh who was regarded as a charismatic and charming character and the impressionable daughter of the British Viceroy. The young girl was forced to leave the comforts of England but once at Shimla fell for the charm of the Maharaja. The tale goes that the couple eloped together in 1892 after meeting at Scandal Point. More dramatic reincarnations of the story told by enthusiastic tour guides tell that the young women was kidnapped by the Maharaja from Scandal Point.
